The perpetual cycle of destruction and renewal is famously the only thing in our universe that remains constant. It can be seen in the natural world, and is reflected in our daily experience, acting as a catalyst for self-discovery and growth. Whether these changes indicate a reversal or step forward, they are bound to be transformative.
Justine interprets historical narratives, finding a commonality of experience, irrespective of culture and gender. This archetypal perspective invites us to consider our similarities rather than our differences.
In terms of process, she works at the intersection of figuration and abstraction; dissolving and materialising elements, and using joyous colour, rhythm and frenetic mark making to invoke the feeling of flux.
Justine graduated from Dunedin School of Art, and went on to teach and run a successful business selling ceramic sculpture until 2004. Since then, she has gained an MFA in painting, exhibited widely, and continues to work as a tutor and mentor. She is currently based in the Wairarapa.
