This painting is a depiction of the myth of the expulsion from Eden. I have concentrated on the tipping point, where the status quo is changed forever. In this myth, the result of previous actions became the advent of original sin.

“Time, times and half a time” references the four horsemen of the apocalypse as described in Revelation. They are personifications of war, pestilence, famine and death, who are unleashed when the first four seals of the scroll are opened. They are harbingers of the destruction of the world, heralding renewal on a higher plane.

This is composed around a self portrait by Rembrandt, and references James Joyce's novel in the title. I was demonstrating how to deconstruct a traditional portrait in one of my classes, and there is an accurate underpainting which I copied from Rembrandt, then overlaying using a more contemporary language of paint.
